How Many Wipes to Bring Backpacking (Per Day and Per Trip)
The short version: for backcountry hygiene, plan on about 2 to 3 wipes per person per day — one for a quick "pits and bits" cleanup and one or two for after a bathroom trip — plus a small buffer. For a typical weekend that's 6–8 wipes; for a week, 15–20. Carry them in a resealable bag, and remember every used wipe rides home with you, so more isn't always better.
The daily rule of thumb
Most backpackers land at 2–3 wipes a day:
- 1 wipe for an evening freshen-up — face, underarms, feet, and anywhere chafing starts.
- 1–2 wipes for bathroom cleanup, depending on the day.
Hot, sweaty, or high-mileage days push you toward 3; cool, low-effort days often need just 1–2. If you're rationing water for washing, a wipe is also your stand-in for a rinse.
How many to pack, by trip length
| Trip | Base (2–3/day) | Pack this many |
|---|---|---|
| Overnight (1 night) | 2–3 | 4 |
| Weekend (2 nights) | 4–6 | 6–8 |
| 3–4 days | 6–12 | 10–14 |
| Week (7 days) | 14–21 | 15–20 |
The "pack this many" column adds a small buffer for a bad-weather day, a stomach bug, or a dropped wipe. Beyond a week, resupply rather than hauling a month of wipes at once.
Weight, water, and pack-out math
Wipes are light going in and heavier coming out, because you carry every used one until the next trash can (never bury them — see how to pack out wipes). Two habits keep that manageable:
- Count them out at home. Pull exactly what you need into a small zip bag instead of carrying the whole pack — you'll take less and it stays moist.
- Keep a dedicated pack-out bag. An opaque zip bag or dog-poop-style bag holds used wipes with no smell and no leak.
Because you pack them out, right-sizing matters: overpacking means dead weight in and out.
What Nature Buff uses
Our Buff Wipes are 100% bamboo and fragrance-free, so a single wipe does double duty for body and hands, and they compress in your pack-out bag instead of bulking up like plastic wipes. Pull your day count, seal the rest, and go.
Common questions
How many wipes per day backpacking? About 2–3 for most people — one for body, one to two for bathroom use.
Can I bring fewer if I also carry soap? Yes. A bar of biodegradable soap plus a bandana rinse can cut wipe use to 1/day. See our starter kit.
Do wipes replace a real wash? They bridge between washes; for a fuller clean, wash 200 ft from water with biodegradable soap.
