Castile vs Bar Soap for Backpacking: Which Is Better?

The short version: castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s) is a versatile biodegradable liquid that does many jobs; a biodegradable bar is lighter, leak-proof, and simpler to ration. For most backpackers a bar wins on pack weight and mess; castile wins if you want one liquid for body, dishes, and laundry. Both must be used 200 feet from water.

If you count grams and hate cleaning up leaks, go with a biodegradable bar. If you want a single liquid for every chore and don’t mind babying the bottle, castile is a solid, proven choice. Many people carry a small bar for the trail and keep castile at base camp.
